F.A.Q.
Why should I train at
WHITE DRAGON
MARTIAL ARTS and not
another school? We are also a Personal Development Center. We help Children, Teens and Adults with Self-Esteem, Confidence, Respect, and Self-Control. "The Desire To Have That Take Charge, I Can Do It Attitude". Apart from the physical, our Do Jang is a community of like-minded individuals and families. Most people remark that the ‘Family Feel’ of the school is what sealed the deal in their decision to join. We offer programs and opportunities for our students that are extremely rare for martial arts studios; our Green Team, for example, is a group of students that organize local clean-ups and activities that promote sustainable living. Students are required to take part in a variety of projects that relate to nutritional self-defense, environmental self-defense, non-violent conflict resolution, Acts of Kindness and respect and more. How often am I (or is my child) expected to train – can I come once per week? Two times per week is the minimum commitment necessary to progress; three times per week at advanced levels. Do you have weekend classes? Yes, but Saturday classes are part of open class program; Kids and Adults are Monday / Thursday for Beginners. Tuesday / Wednesday / Friday Classes are for Advanced and Sparring. Private lessons may be scheduled on weekends as well. Refer to our Schedule Can I (or my child) come any days I’d like? We have many programs to enable a tremendous amount of flexibility, however families must stick to one program or another; Little Dragons are Monday / Wednesday or Tuesday / Thursday. Kids, Teen & Adults are Monday / Thursday for Beginners. Tuesday / Wednesday / Friday are for Advanced. We also have a Stick Fighting Class that is every other Wednesday. Refer to our Schedule When does the next session start? Our classes are ongoing. You can start at any time. Keep in mind that martial arts are a discipline, not a sport. You will be expected to train year-round with reasonable breaks for vacations or holidays. Your consistency and dedication is what will see you through to each of your belts and getting your first Black Belt! Can I hold my membership? If so, how? We allow one, one-month Hold per year. Holds must be sent in writing with 30 days notice. Holds cannot be applied retroactively. Holds also require a restart date which will also restart the automatic billing. If you choose our Yearly membership, your break is built in. (Please refer to your copy of our detailed Membership Terms or it’s available at the front desk, not online.) Should you require a longer Hold period, you’ll need to send in a Cancellation with 30 days written notice. Please refer to important Cancellation details in the Membership Terms. Do you have month-to-month programs? No, however most people start with a month special and switch to a longer term membership since there is a significant discount to students who commit to training on a 1 year to 4 year basis. What other fees will I be expected to pay? Upon enrollment in our Do Jang, you will pay your 1 Month Special; this fee includes a new uniform. After your 1 month special, you’ll sit down with the Director or Instructor and go over your options. We do not charge belt test fees, nor do we offer upgrade packages. Your belt test is a reward for your hard work and we do not feel it is something you should pay for. Additionally, all of our students are offered the SAME opportunities for learning. We do not have exclusive (and more costly) Black Belt Club upgrades. Every student that enrolls is given the same high quality instruction and is held to the highest standards. Can I do drop-ins? No. Learning any martial arts requires commitment and consistency Do you have Camps for kids? We have two to three amazing camps each summer that run from 9am-3pm. Students earn 2 class credits per day for their training. Each student brings their own nutritional lunch daily. We also do a Special Camp, throughout the year. Please call or to check dates & availability. 815-759-W.D.M.A. 9362 Info@whitedragonkarate.net How many students are in each class? The average class size for Kids is 15 to 20, Little Dragons 6 to 8; each with a minimum of two Black Belt Instructors per class. Adults average 4 - 8 students per class. What style do you teach? We teach American Free-Style Martial Arts, which is a blended system with Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Hapkido, Boxing, and Kick Boxing. My child had a ______ belt at another school; do they need to start at white belt again? Yes, unless a student has been training in Tae Kwon Do they will start at White Belt. Often times a child with prior training picks up our basics quickly and we have had great success with children making the transition from their former belt to our new one. The Old Philosophy is "empty your old cup of knowledge and fill it with new knowledge." Do you have classes just for girls / women? Our classes are mixed with about 40% of our student being female. We encourage it!! In Fact 3 of our teenage girls that are Full Contact Kick Boxers. With one being a "W.A.K.O. KICK" World Champion. Do I (or does my child) need a uniform and where can I get one? Each student needs a Martial Arts "Do Bok" (uniform) similar to a Judo / Jiu-Jitsu Gi. A uniform is included in your enrollment fee. I am not interested in full contact sparring. Can I still participate? Yes, absolutely. Sparring training starts at the Intermediate level or earlier for students with prior experience. Additionally, full contact sparring is reserved for people who really want to do it. It is not pushed on any student regardless of rank. How long does it take to get a Black Belt? That depends on your long-term dedication and athletic potential. Our phenomenal Black Belts have done it in 3 years of intense (5 days per week) training. On average it takes 4 to 4 1/2 years but can take up to 5 years. Time spent training is measured with actual skills but never prioritized over technique. What is the youngest age one can get a Black Belt? The earliest age to earn a Junior Black Belt has been 7 years old after the minimum required length of training and accomplishment of real skills and technique. These Junior Black Belts can earn 9 levels of rank and then test for their adult Black Belt at age 16. We pride ourselves on having the highest standards for Black Belt. What is the chief obstruction to achieving a Black Belt? More often than not it is the C.C.A.N.I. (Constant Commitment to Neverending Improvement) and not athletic talent that determines a person’s success. If you have dedication, drive, conditioning and desire, the amazing transformations can be accomplished. Am I too old? More important than age is asking yourself, if you have limiting injuries. Do you have pre-existing knee, back or shoulder injuries? We have had several people achieve their Black Belt after they were forty with these same problems. One turned seventy- two, right before his test. Remember, that our system stresses Kicking, Punching, Stretching and Conditioning. There is a good amount of controlled contact inherent in this type of training even when it is done in a safe environment.
Is this Karate? Is this the style I see in the Ultimate Fighting Championship? No, but this is a martial art academy or Do Jang, not a fighters gym. However, the techniques you see are the exact same; as in Chuck Norris’ WCL, same as the IFL and the same as Boxing. The only difference is how things are taught and what we believe martial arts are all about. We believe martial arts are a vehicle for Self-Improvement and learning about one’s self. A fighter’s gym primary focuses on techniques to make the individual a better fighter. Our Do Jang takes these same ultra effective drills and skills and makes them SAFE, so everyone can grow and benefit from the Martial Arts.
